Recently, there was an article in a popular brazillian magazine about Kongregate: "The games YouTube (...) Welcome to the golden age of free games". They also mention the (lovely) games Fancy Pants Adventures, 3D logic, Desktop Tower Defense, Platform Racing and Asteroids Revenge II.
The coolest part of the article is this: "There's no lack of motivation: the most popular games get a nice revenue, since Kongregate distributes to the game authors up to 75% of the total revenue acquired from advertisings.". That's awesome, really motivating, but would it be bigger than the money from the game sponsors (Armor Games, Crazy Monkey Games, etc.)? Paul Greece (the creator of Desktop Tower Defense) said "I get from 5.000 to 10.000 USD per month!". Okay, I'm not calling anyone a liar here, but thats pretty improbable, a single page with a game hardly makes 1.000 USD per month (the average of the best games out there), even with loads of ADs.
I think that Kongregate isn't "The games YouTube", but the games Google AdSense (okay, I know that Google also owns youtube :P)? Probably the best fit for "The games YouTube" would be Newgrounds. It's easy to compare: Youtube is HUGE, if you share a good movie there, millions of people will see it. Same goes for Newgrounds. YouTube doesn't share the profit with you. Neither does Newgrounds...
I wonder if Kongregate will ever be bigger than Newgrounds, and if that happens, Newgrounds will probably start "sharing" the profit too, so it's good for us (or doesn't make a difference!).
